John Cody Fidler-Simpson, journalist, political editor and author, was born in 1944 in Cleveleys, Lancashire.

His career began at the BBC directly after graduating, as a trainee sub-editor in radio news. In 1980 he became political editor, in 1982 diplomatic editor and in 1988 world affairs editor. He is well known for reporting from conflict zones around the globe.
