Nanette and Andre are together in New York, and Nanette's doing her best to forget about the wife whom Andre has left behind in Paris. To make a living, they're playing duets on the street and doing various pick-up gigs. Playing on her own one day, Nanette encounters a quirky stranger named Bruno, who, (since he just happens to be a dead ringer for one of her favorite actors), she can't help flirting with. Soon she's flirted her way into a job as an assistant on the indie film he's putting together -- and even better, Bruno agrees to give Andre a job, too. The film is a love story, set in the 1960s at a jazz festival, with a lead character who's a highly fictionalized version of Miles Davis. When the actor playing him is murdered on while on location in Massachusetts, Nan and Andre try to find out what could have happened. What they uncover -- that the murdered man's father was also murdered, 30 years earlier, sets in motion a chain of events that endangers Nan, Andre, and everyone working on the film. With the help of some familiar friends -- Nan's friend Aubrey and Detective Leman Sweet -- and some new ones, they work on solving the new murder, the old murder, and on figuring out what, if anything, this has to do with Miles Davis....
